Bitcoin price and order book data
Free, versioned, citable, and honest about its own defects.
Two closed eras of market data, collected by this project rather than bought or scraped from a tracker. The older is nine days of MtGox BTC/USD from the autumn crash of 2011, one sample every four or five seconds, best bid and best ask with a distance-weighted measure of the depth behind them. The other runs from December 2014 to November 2015: six venues, one sample every two seconds, eleven months.
Four of those seven books no longer exist. MtGox failed in February 2014, BTC-e was seized by the FBI in 2017, BTCChina closed its exchange the same year, and OKCoin's yuan book died with the People's Bank of China ban. Nobody can go back and collect any of that depth again at any price.
A third series has been running since March 2024 at ten-second cadence across four venues. It is the research this project exists for, it is not published, and nothing on this site is waiting on it. The methodology page describes how it is collected, because its order book column is the third of three definitions that must never be joined into one line.
What a release is
A directory of files at a URL that does not move. Gzipped CSV for anything that reads text,
Parquet for anything that would rather not, a SHA256SUMS covering the directory,
and a manifest.json naming every table with its row count, its date range and the
checksum of each file. A version that has been announced never changes again. Corrections
become a new version and a line in the changelog.
Everything is under CC BY 4.0, and each release gets a DOI through Zenodo so a paper has something permanent to point at.
One release is not a closed era of market data. The fee index is a series computed here every Monday from public on-chain aggregates: what the Bitcoin network charges to move value, as a percentage, daily since August 2010, with the World Bank's remittance average drawn beside it. Its chart is current to within a week and only the citable snapshot is quarterly, which is the one place on this site where what you see is fresher than the newest release.

Bitfinex BTC/USD, daily, 2014 to 2015
One point per UTC day, the last trade in the day, straight from the file the
release ships (bitfinex-daily.json).
A missing day is a day with no rows, drawn as a gap rather than bridged.

Read the methodology before you download
The methodology page is the one that says where the zeros were fabricated, which prices lost their cents and cannot get them back, and why three collectors measured order book depth three different ways that must never be joined into a single series. Every defect worth knowing about is on that page with the number attached. That is what makes this worth citing instead of merely downloading.
